Not only was it a Christmassy slush-fest of warmth and loveliness as we travelled through time and space several times yesterday, it seems that viewers also tuned into the Doctor’s latest adventure en masse, with the show scoring a massive peak audience of 9 million viewers, with an impressive average of 8.9 million based on overnight figures.
That puts Doctor Who fourth in the rankings of most-watched Christmas shows, (third based on average viewers) with the delayed viewing figures yet to come. Looking at the table below and noting that Downton Abbey and Coronation Street were both very close to The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe, one might be encouraged that Doctor Who could move up into second place – and possibly even beat EastEnders if conditions are favourable!
We’ll know for sure in the next couple of weeks, but in the meantime, the top 10 in full:
EastEnders - BBC One – 10.2 million peak (9.9 million average)
Coronation Street – ITV – 9.9 million (9.3 million)
Downton Abbey – ITV – 9.1 million (8.6 million)

Queen’s Speech – BBC One and ITV – 8.2 million (8.2 million)
Strictly Come Dancing – BBC One – 8 million (7.5 million)

All Star Family Fortunes – ITV – 6.9 million (6.4 million)

While we usually discourage reading too much into figures, Christmas is the time of year when these things traditionally mattered, the one time of year in which drawing a huge audience really meant something. Steven Moffat and his team should be proud to have done so well – congratulations all round!
